Brighton

Fitz stepped out of the inn so caught up in his thoughts he nearly ran into the man passing in front of him. “Oh, excuse me, I am dreadfully sorry,” he said with a short bow.

He gave a nod, “No harm has come to me. I see you are a part of our fine military.”

“Yes, I am.” Recognizing the man as the one he had seen watching Hursts’ table so intently yesterday, Fitz hoped the man did not remember him.

Spellbound by the uniform the colonel wore, and seeming not to recognize him, the man said, “I have always dreamed of one day wearing a bright red jacket and traveling to faraway lands, but I have never been given such an opening to join. Have you traveled the world in your career?”

Unsure why the man was continuing the conversation, he thought he may be able to garner some information from him. “There were quite a few years when I saw other shores more often than I did our own, but lately I have been lucky enough to remain here in England.”

With a flash of intrigue, the man asked, “Have you ever seen India, or Africa?”

“My regiment traveled to India twice, and I spent the better part of a year in Africa.”

The man had a far-away look to his eye, “I always dreamed of one day going to the great western frontier of America.”

“I have never had the opportunity to set foot in that particular land.”

“If I did, I would never want to leave. They say you can see for miles across the plains, with no mountains or hills in sight. If I ever came into a bit of money, I would leave everything here to live in such a place.”

“Would you not miss your family?” Fitz prodded for information.

A dark look came across the man’s face as he suddenly said, “My parents have been dead for many years. I must be going.” He turned and disappeared into the crowd.

Fitz returned to his room to write down the odd conversation, and once again set out to visit his friends, soon finding the house indicated on the calling card and knocking on the door.

“May I help you, sir,” the butler answered.

“Colonel Fitzwilliam to see Mr Hurst,” he said as he gave his card.

“Right this way Colonel.” The butler took his hat and led the way to a drawing room.

Fitz smiled when he saw David Hurst with a small bundle in his hands, sitting in a chair by the fire. The butler quietly knocked on the open door, and Hurst nodded his acknowledgement at the visitor, waving him in and dismissing the servant.

“Welcome, Colonel,” he said quietly. “Please pardon me for not standing to greet you properly.”

“No, no, I believe we are good enough friends to do away with such formalities, especially for such an angelic creature as you hold in your arms.” He walked over to the fireside chair and sat down, leaning over to see the baby.

He gently readjusted the blanket and lifted the babe a little, “Colonel, may I introduce to you my daughter, Amelia.
